Broken Leg Theater Has A New Home!
Broken Leg Theater is proud, grateful, and humbled to have been selected as the Resident Community Theater for the Baxter Perkinson Center for the Arts!
Located at 11810 Centre Street in Chester, VA, this state of the art facility is home to the Jimmy Dean Theater which boasts an approximate 350 seat capacity. Our casts will be ready to whisk you away on your next grand adventure, and our tech crews will dazzle with all the lighting and sound that this incredible theater has to offer.
The inspiration for the center began when members of a local community group, The John Rolfe Players, began a friendship with Chester resident Betty Matthews. Matthews spent the last two decades of her life fundraising and advocating for the dream project of a Chester based arts center, and served as the first chair of what is now known as the Chesterfield Cultural Arts Foundation. The project was finally brought to life through a partnership with Chesterfield County and the Chesterfield Economic Development Authority. Though Betty Matthews passed before she could see the fruits of her labor, the lobby of the center was named in her memory and features her portrait with a plaque,
Broken Leg Theater’s new home was named to honor W. Baxter Perkinson Sr., whose son Baxter Perkinson Jr. and his wife Elaine, donated $1 million of the foundation’s contribution of $2.1 million towards the completion of the project. Baxter Perkinson Jr., a local dentist, and Elaine are both talented artists that are featured in the Baxter and Elaine Perkinson Art Gallery. Considered wonderful and generous people by all who meet them, Baxter and Elaine are cherished friends of the Perkinson Center staff and the community.
We owe our deepest thanks to these beloved fixtures of the Chester community, to our supporters, our donors, and to our BLT family, without whom we would not be able to be a part of this incredible new journey. BLT has long been dreaming of the day when we would have a true home, and that time has finally arrived. We look forward to welcoming you to a magical and memorable new experience with us. Broken Leg Theater, welcome home!
